A popular religious education teacher died when she slipped into the path of a bus, an inquest in Cardiff has heard.

Fflur Bedwyr, 34, stumbled on a pavement and fell headfirst under the vehicle on a busy street in the city.

The head of year nine at Bro Morgannwg High School in Barry died at the roadside in August last year from severe head and chest injuries.

Recording a verdict of accidental death Cardiff coroner Mary Hassell said it was a totally random accident.

The inquest heard bus driver Colin Havard was travelling at about 15 miles an hour at the time.

"All of a sudden there was a bang and the young lady had come off the road," he told the inquest.

"One of the passengers shouted out: "She's been hit".

Mr Havard stopped the bus and called emergency services to the road in Canton, Cardiff.

Motorist Kenneth Giles, who was driving behind the bus, told the inquest: "If I was driving the bus I don't think it would have been any different.

"I don't see how he could have missed her."

The scene of the incident in the city centre was sealed off

The inquest heard that Miss Bedwyr, originally from Cardigan, was fit and healthy and enjoyed skiing, played touch rugby and ran marathons.

Ms Hassell said: "I wish I could offer some kind of reason for this but I think it was totally random."

Following the accident the head teacher at Ysgol Gyfun Bro Morgannwg, Dylan Jones, described her death as a "great loss".

"She had a wonderful, warm personality and was highly regarded by staff, pupils and parents," he said.

"She made an immeasurable contribution to both the school and the pupils' development and was one of the mainstays of the school. She will be greatly missed by all."

A Facebook page was set up in her memory by pupils who also left tributes at the gates of the school.
