Head needs more grit for school

A head teacher in Northamptonshire is urging parents to bring buckets of salt on Monday to ensure their children's school can continue to stay open. Sally Hamson has kept Wollaston primary school open throughout the cold snap but has now run out of salt and grit. She defied severe weather because of the negative publicity about teachers. Helped by staff, she has kept the school's sloping playground and car park ice-free but now needs more salt and grit in case of more bad weather. 'Lot of determination' Ms Hamson said: "We are incredibly icy. The playground and school car park is on a slope. "We've been busting a gut trying to stay open, but there's no grit left, so potentially we might have to close. "I put a plea out to the village and parish councils, which have agreed to let me use rock salt from the bin at the bottom of the hill. "So we rang round on Friday asking parents to bring a bucket of the salt with them on Monday morning, so we can open. "We'll open only one of our three entrances and use whatever salt we've got on that. "We've got this far just through a lot of determination from teachers and parents helping to keep the site as clear as possible." |
