Guilty pleas over cadet killing | Guilty pleas over cadet killing |
(30 minutes later) | |
Seven men and two youths have admitted their involvement in an attack in Liverpool in which a 16-year-old Army cadet died.
Joseph Lappin was stabbed in the heart outside a youth club in Everton in October 2008.
The nine admitted conspiracy to commit grievous bodily harm at Liverpool Crown Court at the start of a planned trial.
James Moore, 17, of Silvester Street, Everton, pleaded guilty to Joseph's murder on Wednesday.
'Pay the price' | |
The seven men and two youths were told by the judge, Mr Justice Henriques, that they would all receive jail terms.
"What you all did was quite shocking," he said.
"Regrettably, you will pay the price in due course."
Joseph, of Old Swan, had spent a night watching friends play in a band at the Shrewsbury House Youth Club, on the evening of the attack.
He and friends Callum Naden, then aged 16, and Greg Harold, then 17, had been chased around the building and were trying to get back inside when they were attacked.
Joseph, a cadet member of the Liverpool Scottish Regiment, suffered a fatal stab wound and Callum was stabbed twice but survived.
James Moore admitted stabbing Joseph Lappin through the heart
Police said all three were totally unsuspecting of the simmering feud which was taking place between two local gangs.
They were confronted by the defendants, who had gone to Langrove Street looking for revenge following a fight between their gang and rivals earlier that day.
The 10-strong group were armed with weapons including batons, sticks and bottles, as well as Moore's 4in (10cm) blade.
Moore, then aged 15, knifed Joseph through the heart and Callum in the chest and leg.
Moore has also pleaded guilty to wounding Callum with intent.
The seven men involved are Colin Yell, 24, of Snowdon Lane; Colin Cain, 21, of Barmouth Way; Anthony Preston, 21, of Eldonian Way; Anthony Smith, 22, of Heriot Street, John McDonald, 22, of Wilcock Close; Thomas Riding, 19, of Houlgrave Road and Anthony Greenwood, of Lockfields View.
The judge Mr Justice Henriques lifted an order which had protected the identities of the two younger defendants, Shaun Doyle, 17, of St Albans Court; and 16-year-old Francis Jordan, of Burlington Street.
The nine were remanded in custody until February 1 and 2 when they will be sentenced alongside Moore. |
