Woman hit with hammer in robbery

A woman has been struck on the head with a hammer during a robbery in Belfast city centre.

The woman, aged in her 50s, was walking along Joy Street at about 1540 GMT on Monday when a man struck her and stole her handbag.

Police said the robber was believed to be in his late teens or early 20s, 5ft 6ins in height with a "wirey build".

The woman was taken to hospital with injuries which were not believed to be life-threatening.

The robber was dressed in black and wore a red-trimmed ski mask. He has acne-scarred skin and escaped towards the Ormeau Road.
