Man, 85, stabbed woman 14 times | Man, 85, stabbed woman 14 times |
(about 3 hours later) | |
An 85-year-old man has admitted stabbing "the only woman he had ever loved" 14 times after she rejected his declarations of love.
Joseph McGorman ambushed the 74-year-old charity shop worker in the garden of her Edinburgh home and repeatedly slashed her face.
The High Court in Edinburgh heard only an hour before the stabbing he had kissed Benedicta McLean goodbye.
He was remanded in custody and will be sentenced for the attack next month.
The court was told McGorman, an alcoholic from Edinburgh's Corstorphine area, had become jealous and obsessed with Mrs McLean.
'Falling out' | |
Advocate depute Alex Prentice QC, prosecuting, said the pair had known each other for about two-and-a-half years after Mrs McLean began helping him out with clothing and household items.
"The accused appears to have formed the view that the friendship was much deeper and more significant than it actually was," said Mr Prentice.
Acquaintances of McGorman told the court he described Mrs McLean as the only woman he had ever loved but that he had "fallen out with her", declaring he was going to slit her throat and jump off the Forth Bridge.
Mr Prentice added: "The accused told her he loved her and she told him that she did not need his love as she was married and that she would no longer be going to his house.
"The accused appeared to understand and shook Mrs McLean's hand before kissing her on the cheek.
"The two then parted company and went off in opposite directions."
Judge Lord Pentland heard when Mrs McLean returned home she found McGorman waiting in her garden. He approached her, then stabbed her 14 times.
Doctors later found she had suffered seven cuts to her face and chin, four injuries to her right hand and fingers, two cuts to her left hand and a stab wound to her abdomen, which cut into her liver.
McGorman admitted assaulting Mrs McLean on 14 October 2009 to the danger of her life and leaving her permanently scarred. |
