A baby seal which was found in a Kent back garden, 18 miles from the sea, has been released back into the wild in East Sussex.

The pup, Gulliver, was less than a year old, and was found in a stream in the Dwyer family's garden in Benenden.

It is thought the seal got into the stream from the River Rother, which meets the English Channel at Rye.

Elaine Crouch, RSPCA, said: "She had no hesitation. The minute the door was open she was straight into the sea."

The RSPCA had been caring for the seal at Mallydams Wood Wildlife Centre near Hastings.

Ms Crouch said: "This particular incident was because of the flooding before Christmas, clearly she'd travelled up the river Rother, got into the fields and then once the waters had receded she'd been stranded and headed for the nearest convenience spot which was somebody's back garden."

Although Gulliver was not underweight when she was found, she has gone from weighing 22 kilos to 36 kilos.
