Police puppy webcam star retires

The star of a popular puppy webcam, which attracted more than 300,000 hits from around the world, is retiring.

Heidi is the mother of nine puppies which featured on Northumbria Police's Puppy Watch pages, viewed as far afield as China, Iran, and Papua New Guinea.

The five-year-old German Shepherd, who joined the police at eight weeks old, was bred with Jack, one of the largest and tallest dogs in the force.

Over the years she has had three litters, totalling 28 pups.

Heidi lives in Northumberland with one of the force's kennel attendants, Rachel Willis, who said: "She has always been a fabulous mother and takes excellent care of them all, making things so much easier for us.

"Things will not change too much for Heidi now that she has retired as she will continue living at home with me - having had three big litters she has certainly done her bit for the dog section."

The majority of Heidi's pups have gone on to be working dogs.
