Minor earthquakes strike Donegal

The School of Cosmic Physics in Dublin said one on Tuesday night measured 1.5 on the Richter scale while another on Wednesday morning measured 1.7. The school's Thomas Blake said the tremors were "nature's way of releasing the stresses and strains built up over time in very deep faults". He said a number of people had reportedly "felt the event". "In one school in north Donegal a student actually came in and told the teacher about their experience of having felt it as well," he said. "This school is in the seismology in schools programme that's run by the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies, where children are able to detect earthquakes in the classroom by virtue of having a seismometer running 24/7." |
