Shop Direct 'cutting 1,500 jobs' Shop Direct plans 1,500 job cuts
(30 minutes later)
Home shopping group Shop Direct is to cut 1,500 jobs across three sites in Sunderland, Burnley and Newtown in Powys, the GMB union has said. Shop Direct has confirmed that it plans to close three call centres with the loss of 1,500 jobs.
The announcement comes a year after the company trimmed its workforce by 1,150 positions. The home shopping group said the three affected sites were in Sunderland, Burnley, and Newtown in Powys.
Shop Direct was formerly known as Littlewoods Home Shopping. Shop Direct blamed the announcement on the big growth in the number of people choosing to shop online rather than phoning to speak to its operatives.
The company has yet to make a statement. It has its headquarters in Liverpool and currently employs 10,500 people across the UK. It said that over the past five years, its proportion of sales via online had increased from 18% to more than 60%.
The GMB said the news was a "devastating blow" to the three affected local communities. 'Devastating blow'
