Tests have confirmed that guns found behind a public library in North Lanarkshire were the weapons used in a recent gangland murder in Glasgow.

The guns were found by a member of the public at the back of the library on Academy Street, Coatbridge, on Tuesday.

Forensic tests showed they were used in the shooting of Kevin "Gerbil" Carroll, in the Asda car park in Robroyston, on the afternoon of Wednesday 13 January.

Police are studying CCTV footage from the area where the firearms were found.

Mr Carroll, who was shot several times while sitting in the rear of a black Audi, had alleged links to organised crime in the city and had survived two previous attempts on his life.

Two masked men, who are believe to have carried out the shooting, made off in a dark blue Volkswagen Golf which was driven by a third man. The vehicle had the registration number YF55 EZZ.

The vehicle, missing the number plates, was later recovered burned out in Yetts Hole Road, Glenmavis, Airdrie.

Police want to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the guns' disposal

The guns were found on Tuesday morning, just a few miles from where the car was dumped.

Detectives said they wanted to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the disposal of the weapons or saw anyone acting suspiciously in or around the grounds of the library.

Det Ch Insp Iain Cunningham said: "We know these were the weapons used in Kevin's murder.

"This is a positive step and will assist us in our investigation to identify the people involved in this crime.

"We need to gather further information on the guns: where they came from, when they were left in the library grounds, who left them there.

"We will examine the CCTV in and around the area and conduct further house to house inquiries to identify witnesses who may have information."

Police are also trying to establish if the guns have been used in any other crimes.

"We will establish the history of the guns and will establish if they have been used in not only the murder of Kevin but have any link to other crimes throughout the country," Det Ch Insp Cunningham added.
