One person has been arrested in connection with the sexual assault of a nine-year-old Russian girl in Goa, India, a senior police official said. A man has been arrested in connection with the alleged rape of a nine-year-old Russian girl in Goa, India, police officials say.
Bosco George told BBC News that the man is an employee at a pharmacy in Goa, and an "accomplice of the main accused", who has absconded. Two men have been named as suspects in connection with the alleged assault on Arambol beach on Tuesday.
On Thursday, the police had named two men in connection with the assault at the Arambol beach on Tuesday. Police identified the man they detained as Anil Raghuvanshi and said he was an "accomplice of the main accused," who is believed to have absconded.
A British teenager was raped and killed while holidaying in Goa in 2008. Goa is one of India's most popular tourist destinations.
Senior police official Bosco George said that Anil Raghuvanshi, one of the two people named by the police in connection with the assault, was arrested from a bus stand in Panaji town. Hundreds of thousands of people visit Goa every year. But it was the focus of intense media coverage in 2008 over the rape and murder of a British teenager holidaying there.
He said the man was working with a friend, identified as Aman Bharadwaj, who was the main accused. Two men were held in connection with the case, and were later released on bail. Police say that investigations are still ongoing.
The police believe that Mr Raghuvanshi engaged the mother of the girl on the beach on Tuesday, while his friend assaulted the girl.

The Russian ambassador to India Alexander Kadakin has demanded urgent action against the people responsible for the assault on the girl. Senior police official Bosco George said that Anil Raghuvanshi is an employee at a pharmacy in the area.
"This perverted criminal must be caught and punished severely. Can you imagine a crime like that on a nine-year-old? Unfortunately, this is not the first case of this nature and we expect the Indian side to catch the culprits involved in the abhorrent crime," Mr Kadakin was quoted as telling reporters by India's The Hindu newspaper. They named the main suspect in the assault as Aman Bharadwaj.
A 25-year-old Russian woman was allegedly raped by a local politician in Goa last December. Police believe that Mr Raghuvanshi diverted the attention of the girl's mother while the sexual assault was taking place.
The body of a teenage Russian girl was found on the railway tracks in the Thivim area last year. Reports say the police have not been able to make any headway in the case. Russia's ambassador to India, Alexander Kadakin, has demanded urgent action against the people responsible for the alleged rape.
In February 2008, the body of 15-year-old Scarlett Keeling from Britain was found on a beach in Anjuna. "This perverted criminal must be caught and punished severely...We expect the Indian side to catch the culprits involved in the abhorrent crime," Mr Kadakin was quoted as telling reporters by India's The Hindu newspaper.
Two men were held in connection with the case, and were later released on bail. The police say that investigations are still on.
