The survey showed that across Northern Ireland's hospitals, infections of surgical wounds and urinary tract infections were the most common. The Chief Medical Officer for Northern Ireland Dr Michael McBride said the hospital trusts needed to do more to reduce hospital related infections.
"We are beginning to see downward trends in the figures but it still isn't good enough and there is more that we can do.
"We know that there are evidence based interventions which will significantly reduce if not prevent entirely some infections. We need to have a zero tolerance to those infections that are preventable."
The survey suggested that across Northern Ireland's hospitals, infections of surgical wounds and urinary tract infections were the most common.
