Under President Yushchenko, Ukraine has realigned itself with the West, moving away from its traditionally close relationship with its giant neighbour Russia.
This election could therefore be a turning-point, determining whether such a strong pro-Western and anti-Russian policy will continue or not.
Many people here are deeply disillusioned with the country's political leaders whose in-fighting has held the country back even during the economic crisis which has hit Ukraine particularly hard.
And the campaigns run by both candidates for this election will have done little to reassure voters.
