Seven people and a child were injured in a large fire in flats and a shop in north London.

Four fire crews had to use ladders to rescue 14 people from the three-storey property in Green Lanes, Haringey, after flames cut off the staircase.

Seven adults and a child were treated for smoke inhalation at the scene by paramedics and then taken to hospital.

London Fire Brigade said eight other people managed to escape the building before they arrived at about 2300 GMT.

A spokesman said the blaze, which was extinguished at about 2355 GMT on Saturday, damaged part of the shop and totally destroyed the staircase between the ground floor and second floor.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.
