The first bomb reportedly went off inside the police compound in Bannu. The second blast came as rescuers responded to the first blast. The two bombs went off just minutes apart near the Bannu training centre on Thursday evening, officials said. At least six police officers were among those killed in the blasts.
Officials say that most of the victims were police officers. "The first attack took place outside the main gate of the barracks," a local police official told the BBC.
He said that soon after the first blast, Bannu's police chief Iqbal Marwat had arrived to inspect the scene in his car.
"Seconds after he got out of the car, an explosion took place near his vehicle," the official said, adding that Mr Marwat was one of about 20 injured in the explosions.
Police later cordoned off the area.
