Homes evacuated in Belfast alert Officers injured in alert chase
(about 1 hour later)
A number of houses have been evacuated in north Belfast following a security alert. Five police officers have been slightly injured following a car crash with a suspect vehicle in north Belfast.
Residents from three streets off the Cliftonville Road were asked to leave their homes at around 2300 GMT on Thursday. It happened after the officers responded to a car acting suspiciously at the back of Antrim Road police station at about 2300 GMT on Thursday.
They said police came to their doors shortly after a car crashed on a street at the back of the houses. A number of houses in the Cliftonville Parade area were evacuated as Army bomb experts examined the car.
Army bomb experts arrived at the scene at about 0100 GMT. Part of the Cavehill Road was also cordoned off. A 19-year-old man was arrested. Police said the officers involved sustained minor whiplash injuries.
Nothing suspicious was found in the arrested man's car and residents were allowed back to their homes shortly at 0400 GMT on Friday.
