A 19-year-old soldier has died while on exercise in Wiltshire, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has confirmed. A 19-year-old soldier has been crushed to death at a base in Wiltshire while checking a vehicle for deployment.
Wiltshire Police said the soldier suffered a fatal injury in an industrial accident at Ludgershall. The private was performing a "first parade check" on an eight-wheeled military vehicle with another soldier at the base in Ludgershall.
They believe the soldier sustained his injuries while he was carrying out routine checks on a vehicle prior to it being deployed on exercise. A spokesperson for the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) said the soldier became trapped between the vehicle and a mobile flatbed transporter.
The Health and Safety Executive and Wiltshire Police are carrying out a joint investigation into his death. The incident is being investigated by both the HSE and Wiltshire Police.
The soldier is due to be formally identified later and a coroner has been informed. The soldier's body is due to be formally identified later and a coroner has been informed.
The accident happened on Sunday afternoon at a site near the Tidworth Barracks. 'Deep shock'
A Ministry of Defence spokesperson said the soldier was a private and belonged to the 9 Supply Regiment, Royal Logistic Corps, who are based at Hullavington, Wiltshire. The HSE spokesperson said the accident happened when one of the pair raised the bed so that they could perform the checks on Sunday afternoon at a site near the Tidworth Barracks.
Three months ago Royal Welsh soldier Private Gavin Williams, 22, of Hanged, Caerphilly died while on punishment exercise at Lucknow Barracks in Tidworth. "The same soldier then got back into the cab and lowered the bed, and the next thing he heard was someone shouting to him to raise it. For whatever reason, the other soldier was between the raised bed and the bottom of the vehicle," she said.
Five servicemen from Private Williams' regiment - the 2nd Battalion Royal Welsh - were arrested on suspicion of manslaughter and released on police bail. The spokesperson added that the soldier who was operating the lowering of the bed was left "in deep shock".
"It's dreadful for everybody concerned. Obviously for the family of the deceased soldier but also devastating for the person operating the vehicle.
"He will be interviewed but certainly was not in a fit state yesterday and it's not clear whether he will be today."
The private was from the 9 Supply Regiment, Royal Logistic Corps who are based at a military base in Hullavington.
