Plans for bilingual street signs Village road signs get go-ahead
(10 minutes later)
A series of new signs for streets in Dolwyddelan, Conwy are being suggested, to prevent any potential confusion for emergency services in the village. A village in Conwy is to receive a series of new bilingual street signs, say officials.
The community council wants to rename nine streets to include the name in both Welsh and English. Some streets in Dolwyddelan do not have signs and the community council feared this could hamper and confuse the emergency services.
Some of the streets currently do not have name plates at all with fears this could hamper emergency services. But following a meeting, Conwy council said it would ask community councillors if they could help pay for the changes.
If agreed by Conwy council - which is due to make a decision later - the scheme will cost an estimated £2,470 If they are unable to, the signs would be changed "as and when", said head of regulatory services Phil Rafferty.
The scheme, affecting nine streets, is estimated to cost £2,470.

It's a 'what if' situation that could be life saving - or not Gwyn Roberts, Dolwyddelan Community Council 'Important point'
Community council clerk Gwyn Roberts said: "In this day and age, with services like police, fire and ambulance being centrally located, if they are called out they need to know which street to go to. Mr Rafferty said: "Members of the licensing committee agreed that we would approach the community council to find out if they could support this proposal financially.
"If they are unable to provide support, the signs will be changed as and when - after the existing list of replacements signs has been completed."
Dolwyddelan community council clerk Gwyn Roberts had raised concerns about the signage problem.
He said: "In this day and age, with services like police, fire and ambulance being centrally located, if they are called out they need to know which street to go to.
"It's one important point that needs to be made. Obviously in a bilingual village, it seems commonsensical that the signs are in Welsh and English."It's one important point that needs to be made. Obviously in a bilingual village, it seems commonsensical that the signs are in Welsh and English.

"The only problem might be finance, as all councils are facing restrictions," said Mr Roberts.
"I think the council would be happy if we do them one or two a year."
Dolwyddelan Community Council has suggested that the plates for High Street (Pentre Bont) and Bridge Street (Stryd y Bont) be replaced immediately, with remaining signs being changed at a later date.Dolwyddelan Community Council has suggested that the plates for High Street (Pentre Bont) and Bridge Street (Stryd y Bont) be replaced immediately, with remaining signs being changed at a later date.
Consultation
Conwy council's licensing and regulation committee could decide to pass the costs on to Dolwyddelan Community Council or decide to changed the name plates as and when they need replacing.
Following the application, a consultation has taken place and residents of the streets concerned have been invited to comment.
