An explosion caused by a gas leak has killed an 80-year-old man and injured a baby in Barcelona, Spanish media say.

The explosion happened on Monday in an apartment in the Sant Andreu area of the city, capital of Spain's Catalonia region.

The man died in hospital - apparently from smoke inhalation in the fire caused by the blast.

The man had been preparing a drink for his baby niece when the explosion happened, the Efe news agency said.
