Female stars up for Brits battle Lady Gaga wins Brit Awards triple

Lady Gaga, Lily Allen, Florence and the Machine and Pixie Lott go head-to-head at the Brits on Tuesday, leading the shortlist with three nominations each. Lady Gaga has scooped a Brit Awards hat-trick, winning all three prizes she was up for including best international female and breakthrough act.
X Factor runners-up JLS are also up for a possible hat-trick. The singer, who arrived at the London ceremony wearing a three-tiered white dress and a tall white wig, also won best international album for The Fame.
Performers at the UK's biggest music awards include Lady Gaga, Kasabian, Cheryl Cole, Jay-Z and Alicia Keys. Dizzee Rascal was named best British male, and said: "It's about time as well," as he collected his award.
Prince Harry has recorded a message for the live show, as the ceremony celebrates its 30th anniversary. The awards themselves began in 1977. Rapper Jay-Z won the prize for best international male.

Robbie Williams will receive the honorary award for outstanding contribution to music, ending the show with a live performance. Lily Allen kicked off the show at Earls Court, performing The Fear while entering the stage on a glittery blimp.
Williams is also nominated in the best male category alongside Dizzee, Mika, Paolo Nutini and Calvin Harris. The star also collected the award for best British female, her first Brit accolade. Not expecting to win, the singer said: "I only wore this wig because I thought it would be hard for the cameramen to find me to catch my disappointed face."
X Factor 2008 finalists JLS have had huge success since they left the show X Factor runners-up JLS picked up the prize for best British breakthrough.
Lott, Allen and Welch are all nominated for best female artist, alongside Leona Lewis and Bat for Lashes. Allen is the bookmakers' favourite to win. Band member Oritse Williams said: "We never ever thought this would happen, you've made our dream come true."
Welch and Allen are also up for best British album - with Welch's Lungs favourite to walk away with the prize.
Nineteen-year-old Lott joins Welch in the nominations list for best breakthrough act, and is also up against Allen in the best singles category. The pair are nominated for Mama Do and The Fear respectively.
Boy band JLS are up for best breakthrough act, best British group and best British single, for Beat Again - their debut single which went straight to number one last summer.
The single prize represents the group's best chance of picking up a trophy, as it is decided by public vote.
Gaga is nominated for best international female solo artist and best international album for The Fame - she is tipped by bookmakers to win both. She is also up for best international breakthrough.

The Spice Girls' 1997 performance of their hits Wannabe and Who Do You Think You Are took the first award while Oasis' (What's the Story) Morning Glory was named best album.
