Up to 10 cm (4 in) of snowfall is possible on higher ground with freezing temperatures continuing into Friday, forecasters are warning. BBC Wales meteorologist Derek Brockway said up to 15cm (6in) of snow could fall on higher ground, in the Brecon Beacons and Black Mountains.
Drivers have been warned to take extra care and refer to Traffic Wales for motorway and trunk road conditions. Motorists have been asked to Traffic Wales for road conditions.
BBC weather presenter Sue Charles said there was a risk of some snow through Thursday afternoon, continuing into the evening. Much of south Wales will have up to 5cm (2in) of snow on Thursday, although up to 10cm (4in) could fall on higher ground, Mr Brockway said.
"It's a relatively small area, but could have a big impact, because a large amount of snow could fall in a short space of time through the evening rush hour," she said. The snow is expected to continue falling for much of the day before turning into rain and sleet, as it pulls away into England, he said.
Temperatures overnight could fall to -3C bringing a risk of icy roads, he added.
Mr Brockway also said wintry showers are expected in north and west Wales on Friday with a mix of sunny and wintry showers over the weekend and a possibility of more snow next week.
