The FCO was told on Saturday afternoon that the men had been been released and the case was closed. The FCO had originally said the two men had already been released, earlier on Saturday.
However, a spokeswoman later said the men were still being held while the Indian authorities investigated.

"They are still being held and we are providing consular assistance," she added.
"They are waiting to be informed by the Indian authorities of their release."
The pair were believed to be optimistic that they would be cleared and released by the Indian authorities shortly.
