Former US Vice-President Dick Cheney had a mild heart attack on Monday, his fifth in 32 years, his office says.

A statement said Mr Cheney was "feeling good" and was likely to leave hospital in Washington within a day or two.

Mr Cheney, 69, who left office in January last year, had his first heart attack aged 37 and has had quadruple bypass surgery.

He was taken to George Washington University Hospital on Monday after experiencing chest pains.

His office said that Mr Cheney "underwent a stress test and a heart catheterisation. He is feeling good and is expected to be discharged in the next day or two".

Reuters news agency reported that former US President George W Bush had telephoned Mr Cheney at the hospital.

It was unclear whether Mr Cheney would be able to join the former president and other members of the Bush administration in Washington on Friday, for the first time since they left office in January 2009.

Mr Cheney has undergone several operations to clear blocked arteries and was fitted with a pacemaker in 2001.

In October 2008 he underwent treatment to correct an abnormal heart rhythm.
