Australians eating against racism

Australians are being urged to have a Vindaloo against Violence, as a way to take a stand against racism directed at members of the Indian community.

The move follows a spate of attacks against Indians in Melbourne, including the murder of graduate student Nitin Garg at the start of the year.

That has tarnished the reputation of Australia's second most populous city.

It has also resulted in a steep fall-off in visa applications from overseas students.

The organisers report that some 10,000 people have registered to take part, and that curry houses across the city have started booking out.

Australian expatriates around the world are also being invited to take part.
