Norwich City paid libel damages

Norwich City Football Club has said it will be paid a "five-figure sum" from the News of the World for reporting it was going into administration. The News of the World published an article on 24 January headlined "Canaries on brink", and said the club had called in potential administrators. In a statement, the club said a settlement had been reached including damages and a published apology. The News of the World would not comment on the matter. We are delighted this matter has been sensibly resolved Club chairman Alan Bowkett The club's solicitors Leathes Prior said High Court action against the newspaper had now been withdrawn. A statement on the football club's website said an apology to the club and chairman would be published, the club's legal fees were being paid in full, and a five-figure sum for damages would be paid. Norwich City chairman Alan Bowkett said: "We are delighted this matter has been sensibly resolved, that the truth has been established and that the club's reputation is restored. "It was disappointing that the News of the World published the article in question." He added: "We are pleased the matter is now concluded." |
