India have won their opening match in the men's field hockey World Cup in Delhi - against arch-rival Pakistan.

Sandeep Singh scored from two penalty corners to bring India a 4-1 victory - their first win in four matches against Pakistan.

Pakistan's coach said India had played better but all was "not over yet".

In a stadium heavily guarded after security concerns, it was a rare clash between the South Asian sporting rivals since the November 2008 Mumbai attacks.

India's coach Jose Brasa is quoted by the AFP news agency as saying: "We must not fly high and keep our feet on the ground because the next match is against Australia."
