A five-year-old girl has died after becoming ill, police have said.

Tayside Police were called to a house in Arbroath, Angus, on Saturday morning after the youngster was reported to have taken unwell.

The girl has been named as Shelley Greenhowe. A post-mortem examination is to be carried out to establish the exact cause of death.

The house where Shelley was found will be subject to a forensic examination as a matter of routine, police said.

The force said officers went to the house at about 1045 GMT on Saturday.

"She was taken by ambulance under police escort to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee where sadly she was pronounced dead," police said.

A police family liaison officer has been appointed and a report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal, as with all sudden deaths.
