Former Labour Leader Neil Kinnock was Mr Touhig's predecessor as MP for the seat. Mr Touhig said: "Labour party procedure has been followed and party members will now get the opportunity to select a candidate from a talented shortlist."
Labour's opponents have also responded to the resignations.
Plaid Cymru's Helen Mary Jones said: "Developments in Islwyn reflect the disarray that Labour are in. We already knew that the battle in Islwyn would be keenly fought and this latest split means that Islwyn is certainly in play for Plaid Cymru.
"What people in Islwyn need now, more than ever before, is a focussed and strong local voice to stand up for their area, not a party more concerned with internal politics and in-fighting.
