Tetley's cask ale will be brewed outside Yorkshire for the first time since 1822 after the closure of the historic brewery in Leeds next year.

Carlsberg UK has agreed a deal under which ale production will move to the Marston's brewery in Wolverhampton after the Leeds site shuts in mid-2011.

It said it could not find a suitable site for cask ale brewing in Yorkshire.

However, Tetley's Smoothflow will be produced at the Molson Coors brewery in Tadcaster, North Yorkshire, it said.

'Best option'

Andy Hume, brewery director at Carlsberg's Leeds brewery, said: "We looked at all realistic options in Yorkshire to brew Tetley's cask. However, there was not the suitable capacity available.

"As such we needed to find the best option outside of Yorkshire in terms of quality and processes and Marston's provides this."

He described Marston's as "one of the biggest and most respected brewers of cask ale in the UK".

The company was "delighted" to have found a partner in Yorkshire to brew Tetley's Smoothflow, which has bigger sales than cask ale.

"We have spent the last 18 months, since we announced the closure of the brewery, ensuring that we found the best possible partners," said Mr Hume.
