A spokesman for Durham Police said the identity of the dead person was not yet known. One of the single-deck vehicles had a number of elderly passengers on board. The other was not carrying any passengers, according to police.
Two passengers were left in a critical condition and a further six, some of them elderly, were in a serious condition and taken to hospital. Four injured people were taken by ambulances to hospitals in Durham, Middlesbrough and Newcastle.
A police spokesman said: "At present it is known that one person has died and a number of passengers have been injured. I tried to revive him and he was struggling to breathe. All I could do was sit and wait for the emergency services to turn up Eyewitness Paul Northey, who helped at the scene

He said: "I heard an almighty bang and notice two buses had hit each other.
"I ran over to see whether everyone was OK and saw one man with blood all over his head.
