A European arrest warrant had been issued and the PSNI is seeking his extradition from the Irish Republic. He was arrested in a Dublin police station under a European arrest warrant which was issued on Wednesday.
The warrant, issued by the Serious Organised Crime Agency, was endorsed by the High Court in Dublin on Wednesday. A detective told a later court hearing that when arrested, Mr Adams replied: "I just want to say I'm not guilty."
Liam Adams went to the Bridewell Garda Station in Dublin city centre on Thursday, and an extradition hearing is expected to take place later in the High Court. A bail hearing is due to take place later on Thursday.
It is not the first time he has handed himself in to police. The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) is seeking his extradition from the Irish Republic.
In December, he entered a police station in the Irish Republic, but he could not be legally detained without a warrant. He handed himself in to police a day after the High Court in Dublin endorsed the arrest warrant, which was issued by the Serious Organised Crime Agency.
