Road re-opened after shop blaze
(30 minutes later) | |
Hill Street in Newry has re-opened following a fire at a shop in the city centre.
Fire crews remained overnight at the Around a Pound store on Hill Street after a fire was reported at about 1800 GMT on Thursday.
The roof and internal walls collapsed at the three storey shop, which sells household goods. The road had to be cordoned off to assist firefighters.
Early indications are that the fire started accidentally.
Northern Ireland Fire Service Group Commander John Denvir said that crews remained at the scene to watch for a possible re-ignition in the premises.
He said that the types of materials stocked in the premises, such as lighter fluid, had meant the fire spread quickly.
"Crews got there very quickly, but even in the short time it took them to get there from Newry station the fire had got hold," he said. |
