A strong earthquake has struck eastern Turkey, killing 17 people, Turkish authorities say. A strong earthquake has struck eastern Turkey, killing at least 38 people, officials have said.
The quake had a magnitude of six with a depth of 10km (six miles). Its epicentre was at Basyurt-Karakocan. The 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck the village of Basyurt-Karakocan in Elazig province at 0432 (0232 GMT). It was followed by several aftershocks.
Eight of the deaths were in the village of Okcular, Elazig provincial Governor Muammer Erol said. The mayor of the town of Kovancilar said their had been deaths in Basyurt-Karakocan, as well as in the nearby villages of Yukari Kanatli and Kayali.
Panicked residents fled their houses when it struck at 0432 local time (0232 GMT). CNN Turk reported that the shaking lasted about a minute. Rescue teams have been deployed amid reports of people trapped under rubble.
Other deaths occurred in the villages of Yukari Kanatli and Kayali, state-run Anatolian news agency reported. At least 60 people have been taken to hospital, officials say.
Aftershocks were felt, and there were reports of people trapped under rubble. Elazig Governor Muammer Erol said the earthquake had toppled the minarets of mosques in Basyurt-Karakocan, Yukari Kanatli and Kayali.
Rescuers were trying to help people, as the injured were taken to hospital by relatives. "The number of people injured is not clear. Ambulances keep on going back and forth," he was quoted as saying by Reuters news agency.
