Pakistani police have used tear gas near the Supreme Court in Islamabad to disperse protesters angered at the suspension of the court's top judge. Protesters in Pakistan have been defying security forces to rally in support of the suspended top judge in the Supreme Court.
Hundreds of lawyers have rallied in defiance of security restrictions. Police in the capital, Islamabad, used tear gas against demonstrators and smashed equipment at a TV station showing the protests.
Earlier many opposition activists were arrested hours before Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry was due to appear before a judicial tribunal. President Pervez Musharraf suspended Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry last week for abuse of office.
