An online campaign is using pop stars and footballers to encourage young people to vote in May's Scottish Parliament and council elections.

The VoteScotland website will include digital games to help explain the voting systems.

There is a poll where people can cast votes to create a Scotland "super pop group" and the ideal five-a-side football team.

The campaign is also being backed by the Electoral Commission

The first digital game asks players to cast two votes to create a Caledonian 'super pop group' from the country's leading acts such as KT Tunstall and Belle and Sebastian.

The game is based on the Additional Member System which will be used in the Scottish Parliament elections.

Virtual tour

A second interactive game asks voters to select footballers, in order of preference, from a list of top Scottish Premier League players.

This is based on the Single Transferable Vote, the voting system being used in the council elections.

There will also be an option to receive a text reminder to vote on 3 May and a mobile website where voters can access information about the elections on their mobile phones.

The site will feature an interactive, virtual tour of an online polling station.

Andy O'Neill, head of the Electoral Commission in Scotland, said: "Using interactive technology such as these digital games allows us to get across important information about the elections in a fun and engaging way."
