Nearby residents recalled hearing a commotion at around the time of the incident.
One member of Shomrin, a local neighbourhood watch group, arrived at the scene minutes after the stabbing.
The neighbourhood watch member said he had been told by a friend who witnessed the attack that there had been fighting between the victims and the assailants beforehand.
Others said it was not uncommon for there to be fighting among youths in the area.
A 26-year-old man from the Samuel Lewis Trust estate said: "Something like this was bound to happen.
"It's always been a rough area. I think it is to do with turf wars between the areas around here - Stoke Newington, Tottenham etc."
Roads in the area have remained closed.
