Europe's oldest woman reaches 114

A celebration has been held in Leeds to mark the 114th birthday of Europe's oldest person.

Florrie Baldwin was joined at Radcliffe Gardens Nursing Home by her 89-year-old daughter Mazie Worsnop, two grandsons and great-great grandchildren.

Mrs Baldwin, who was born in the city on 31 March 1896 and married her late husband Clifford in 1920, became Europe's oldest person last year.

She has put her longevity down to clean living and hard work.

Mrs Baldwin first worked at a jewellers before spending more than 30 years as a clerk for Geo Brays Engineering. She retired at the age of 75.

She was married for 54 years before her husband's death in 1973 and lived alone until the age of 105, when she moved into residential care.

Charlotte Hughes was 115 years and 228 days when she died in 1993, and is still the oldest Briton ever.
