This from BBC South political editor Peter Henley: The Liberal Democrat candidate in Dorset South has attacked the privileged background of her Conservative rival. Harrow-educated local landowner Richard Drax was ridiculed for his quadruple-barrelled name (Plunkett-Ernle-Erle-Drax). Today, Lib Dem Roz Kayes claimed he was too posh to be an MP, saying, "He probably has difficulty understanding the lives of people on a low income. I think that is a serious handicap. I wouldn't want to be in that position". Mr Drax replied: "I don't think it's where you come from that counts, it's where you're going. I will work my socks off for this seat." Labour cabinet minister Jim Knight is defending a majority of 1,812. He said: "I'm standing for the working people of this constituency. That's what I worry about, not his long name or his long wall." | |
