Prince Charles is to attend the funeral of Polish president Lech Kaczynski, who died in a plane crash on 10 April.

The Prince of Wales will join global leaders at the event being held in the southern city of Krakow on Sunday.

The Polish president and his wife, Maria, died along with 94 others in the plane accident in western Russia.

Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall were "shocked and deeply upset" at the deaths of Mr and Mrs Kaczynski, whom they met recently, Clarence House said.

The prince and and his wife visited Poland four weeks ago and stayed as guests of the Polish president and his wife.

The duchess is unable to join Charles because of a broken left leg.

However, she will visit the Polish community's cultural centre in Hammersmith, west London, to sign a book of condolence on Friday.

The royal couple toured the centre in February ahead of a three-day trip to Poland and met leading members of the community.

Mr Kaczynski and his wife will be buried in a crypt in Krakow's Wawel Cathedral - a place reserved for Poland's kings and heroes.

US President Barack Obama, French President Nicolas Sarkozy, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and German Chancellor Angela Merkel are among those also expected to attend the ceremony.
