In front of me is what looks like a huge shopping centre that's collapsed. It's simply a pile of rubble, with a couple of hundred people climbing on top of it. Collapsed buildings are all around.
Lots of people are out in the streets. They are too fearful to go inside their homes, so they are sitting out, salvaging what they can. I've seen one family hauling a mattress across the rubble.
There are two rescue efforts. The official one involves Chinese rescue teams, in their orange overalls, digging through the rubble. Some now have diggers. The road in is jammed with military vehicles bringing in equipment.
The second is by Tibetan Buddhist monks. Thousands of them, carrying pickaxes and shovels, are marching along the streets trying to find anyone else they can help dig out.
I think the chances of anyone being found alive are slim. Temperatures at night are freezing and below.
