Labour have denied that their position on policing numbers has changed after comments made by Alan Johnson during the Daily Politics debate. The home secretary was asked if he could guarantee that police numbers would not fall if Labour formed the next Government and replied that he could not, in apparent contradiction of earlier remarks by Gordon Brown. But a party spokeswoman said Mr Johnson was asked for a one-word answer and was not contradicting the PM.
