  1. 2012: "It looks to me a bit like buying votes" says shadow business secretary Ken Clarke, referring to the government's Strategic Investment Fund. The Tories say almost a billion pounds has benefited businesses in 20 constituencies - 16 of them Labour-held. Speaking to BBC North West, Mr Clarke says: "Peter Mandelson has got a bit of a slush fund for the last year and suddenly makes grants to businesses over Britain a few weeks before an election. Was there a good business case? Or were ministers just buying a good photocall?"

There is to be a phased reopening of UK airspace from 10pm tonight - some no-fly zones will have to remain, but none of those zones are currently over the UK. Transport Secretary Lord Adonis says safe routes can be established for planes through areas with "low ash contamination".
