A struggling village cricket club will bear the name of one of the world's biggest bands after being handed a £750 sponsorship deal.

Slaughter Utd will bear the name of rock band Coldplay on their chests after a hopeful begging letter received a positive response.

The club, who play in the Gloucestershire County League Division 4, need £2,000 each year to survive.

Club secretary Paul Heming, 36, said: "It's a lot for this club."

'Delighted' to help

Mr Heming said he e-mailed the band three weeks ago and received a reply within 24 hours.

The message, from a band assistant, said the cash had been approved by bass player Guy Berryman and the band were "delighted" to help.

Mr Hemming added: "One of the provisions is we have 'Coldplay' on our tops.

"I think there's probably more closet Coldplay fans than we were aware of since everyone's come out of the woodwork asking if they can get cheap tickets."
