The Green Party has issued an apology after a campaign leaflet for a borough council candidate advertised the wrong date for the elections.

Flyers delivered to homes in St Paul's ward, Cheltenham, urged people to vote for Adrian Becker on 6 June.

Both general and local elections are taking place across the UK on 6 May.

A Green Party spokeswoman said it was "embarrassing" and said it looked like the information had been copied from leaflets published in 2009.

"Obviously it's hugely embarrassing and Adrian is bitterly disappointed about it and all we can do is hold our hands up and say 'we're really, really sorry'," she said.

"I think it was using information from previous elections, probably from 2009, and it's basically been copied over from one to the other which is extremely unfortunate.

"It's one of those things and obviously it won't happen again and there are lots of red faces."

The leaflets would not be reprinted because of limited funds, she added.

• The borough council candidates standing in the St Paul's ward are: Green Party: Adrian Becker; Conservative: Greg Patton; Liberal Democrat: Jon Walklett.
