More than a million people have registered an interest for tickets for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, organisers have announced.

Online registration for eight million tickets opened in March. Tickets go on sale in spring 2011, although the prices have yet to be revealed.

Organisers said 96% of registrations came from UK residents.

London 2012 chair Lord Coe said organisers were "thrilled" with the level of interest.

'So enthused'

"What has been really interesting is that there has been significant interest across all Olympic and Paralympic sports," he said.

"It should come as no surprise that the British public is so enthused by the prospect of world class sport coming to these shores.

"I would urge people to continue to sign up and ensure they are in the front row for information between now and 2012."

The figures showed 32% of UK residents' registrations came from the Greater London region, 27% from the South East and 41% from the rest of the country.
