There are reports of a driver being seriously injured in an accident at the Donegal International car rally. A co-driver has died in an accident at the Donegal International Rally.
It is understood it happened between Fanad and Ramelton on Saturday, which is the second day of the three-day event. He was Thomas Maguire, aged in his 30s, from Longwood in County Meath.
Emergency services were at the scene on Saturday evening and the rest of the day's competition was suspended. The accident happened just after 1500 BST on Saturday when his vehicle went off the road south of Portsalon in the north of the county.
Donegal Motor Club, which organises the rally, issued a statement on Saturday evening. The driver of the vehicle was critically injured and is being treated in hospital. The rest of the event has been cancelled and a memorial service will be held on Sunday morning.
The statement said: "An incident has occurred on SS11 of the Donegal International Rally this afternoon. Senior event officials and the rescue services are on the scene. Competitors and club officials will attend the service at the Mount Errigal Hotel in Letterkenny at 1100 BST.
"The remainder of today's competition has been suspended. A further statement will be issued in due course." The annual rally is in its 38th year and was expected to attract an estimated 70,000 spectators to County Donegal.
This is the first time a competitor has been killed in the rally. In 2008, a spectator was killed and in 2002 two stewards were killed.
