The redevelopment will complement The Point £12m conference facility

Plans to redevelop Old Trafford cricket ground and build a new Tesco are to go ahead after the government decided not to challenge local council approval.

Work on the £32m mixed use development to include a 94,000 sq ft Tesco store on neighbouring waste land can now get under way.

The government office for the North West informed Trafford Council it will not be challenging its decision.

A council spokesman said the scheme will secure hundreds of jobs.

Matt Colledge, Trafford council leader, said: "This is positive news for the sports-led regeneration in Stretford and means the scheme, which will result in hundred of local jobs in the area and help secure the future of test match cricket at Old Trafford, moves significantly closer to reality."

The plans for the 50-acre site will also create a new media centre and changing rooms built opposite the upgraded pavilion.

The existing cricket school will be expanded and two new stands will create a capacity of 15,000 which could be increased to 25,000 for international games.
