Priest denies Angelika 'jealousy' Priest denies Angelika 'jealousy'
(about 2 hours later)
A priest who had sex with Polish student Angelika Kluk has denied being consumed by jealousy after discovering she was seeing a married man. A priest has denied he was consumed by jealousy and rage after he found a Polish student he had sex with was having an affair with a married man.
Father Gerry Nugent worked at the Glasgow church where Angelika's body was found under the floor. Father Gerry Nugent, 63, said he was deeply concerned about Angelika Kluk after their sexual relationship.
He was giving evidence at the trial of 60-year-old Peter Tobin at the High Court in Edinburgh. Ms Kluk's body was found under the floor of St Patrick's Church, Anderston, Glasgow in September.
Mr Tobin has denied raping and killing Miss Kluk last September and concealing her remains. The trial continues. Peter Tobin, 60, denies raping and murdering Ms Kluk. The trial at the High Court in Edinburgh continues.
On Tuesday, the priest told the court he felt "shame and disgust" with himself after having a sexual relationship with the 23-year-old on three or four occasions. Father Nugent also admitted a sexual relationship with musician Sarah Howie who played in the church.
Father Nugent went on to say he had suffered from alcoholism but had managed to stay off the drink for 10 years. At the High Court, he faced questions from defence QC Donald Findlay.
'Contributing factor' Condom find
He said he began drinking again about two years ago and agreed that the student, who he knew as Angela, had come into his life at about the same time. Mr Findlay read the court words written by Ms Kluk, in which she said: "I sometimes feel I was always like a nice teddy bear to Gerry.
Defence counsel Donald Findlay QC asked the priest: "Was the relationship between you and Angelika Kluk a contributing factor to you being on the drink?" "When it was interesting to play with me, everything was OK, but when I stopped to admire him as much as before he just put me in the dark closet."
Father Nugent replied: "No, not in my view." You were angry with her, rage fuelled by jealousy and no doubt fortified from time to time by drink Donald Findlay QC
Mr Findlay also questioned Father Nugent about events in the days after Angelika's disappearance. Mr Findlay challenged Father Nugent about "rummaging" in Angelika's room in the chapel house.
He asked him: "Did you ever tell anyone to conceal anything from the police?" The priest denied this and said there were church items stored there.
The 63-year-old replied "yes", adding that he had done so with a woman named Rebecca. Mr Findlay said: "On one occasion you not only went into her room, you were rummaging in her bin. What were you looking for?"
How can you not remember, Father Nugent? What are you hiding? Donald Findlay QCDefence counsel Father Nugent said: "I was not looking for anything. It was what I saw."
Mr Findlay said: "You told, asked, required - whatever word you would choose - Rebecca Dordi to conceal some matter or matters from the police. Am I right?" Mr Findlay said: "You were looking for, and found, evidence of sexual activity, namely a condom."
Father Nugent answered: "Yes." Father Gerry: "I wasn't looking in the bin, I saw it.
The court has previously heard that Ms Dordi was an intensely devout woman with links to St Patrick's Church in Anderston. "That is when I thought there must be a relationship going on here."
The QC also asked about the events of Sunday 24 September. Mr Findlay said: "Isn't it the truth father, particularly after you discovered the nature of the relationship, a sexual relationship, between Martin MacAskill and Angelika you were consumed by jealousy?"
Using telephone records and CCTV footage, Mr Findlay put it to Father Nugent that he had telephoned a woman named Geraldine McGowan and that a car similar to hers was at the church that night. The priest denied this and said he was worried about Ms Kluk.
The priest repeatedly told the court he could not remember that. "I certainly wasn't angry and I wasn't jealous," he added.
Special defence 'Conceal information'
Mr Findlay asked: "How can you not remember, Father Nugent? What are you hiding?" Mr Findlay said Father Nugent became cold and hardly spoke to Ms Kluk after this.
He replied: "I'm not hiding anything." "You were angry with her, rage fuelled by jealousy and no doubt fortified from time to time by drink," he said.
Mr Tobin is accused of attacking Miss Kluk at St Patrick's Church or elsewhere between 24 and 29 September. Father Nugent denied this. He admitted telling Rebecca Dordi, a student from St Petersburgh, about the condom but denied it was a betrayal of trust.
It is alleged he placed a piece of cloth in her mouth, covered her mouth with tape, bound her hands and raped her. Jurors saw photos of a hatch in the church floor, near the confessional, which led to Ms Kluk's body on 29 September.
He is accused of concealing her body under the floor of the church after beating her on the head with a piece of wood, or something similar, and striking her repeatedly with a knife. Father Nugent said he did not know it was there.
He denies all the charges and in a "special defence" he admits having had sex with Angelika with her consent. The trial heard Sarah Howie, who he had a sexual relationship with, had told police of a search of St Patrick's for secret passages, after which she had told Father Nugent of the hatch.
Earlier, Father Nugent admitted telling Rebecca Dordi - described as a devout woman with links to St Patrick's - to conceal information from the police.
The murder charge alleges that Mr Tobin attacked Angelika between 24 September and 29 September in St Patrick's Church, raped her, battered her and repeatedly struck her with a knife.
It is alleged that he then hid the body under the floor of the church in an attempt to defeat the ends of justice.
In a special defence read to the jury, Tobin admits having sex with the Polish student, with her consent.
