Two people have died in an accident involving four lorries and four other vehicles on the M6. Two people have died in an accident involving five lorries, two vans and a car on the M6.
The incident happened in the early hours at junction 16 northbound near Stoke-on-Trent, a spokesman for the Highways Agency said. The pair, who Staffordshire Central Motorway Police Group believe came from Newcastle-under-Lyme, died in the crash at junction 16 on the northbound side.
Another person with serious injuries and a number of others with minor injuries were taken to hospital. One person suffered serious injuries and a number of others were taken to hospital for treatment.
There were still delays in the middle of the morning, but it was hoped the junction would reopen by lunchtime. Delays have continued throughout the morning, but police hoped the carriageway would reopen by lunchtime.
Two lanes were also closed southbound between junctions 14 and 13 after two lorries were involved in a separate accident.

One of the lorries involved in that accident at about 0030 BST was carrying paint which was being cleared off the carriageway.

One lane was also closed during the night southbound between junctions 15 and 14 because of a broken-down vehicle, but that has reopened. A separate accident involving two lorries closed two lanes southbound between junctions 14 and 13.
