He is undergoing a brain scan at the Ulster Hospital in Dundonald.
It happened at the junction of Salisbury Avenue and Antrim Road at about 0100 BST. One man has been arrested.
Drew's uncle, Gary Lenigan, said he had been the victim of a vicious assault.
"Drew left the house in the early hours of this morning and walked over to the garage - from Glencairn to the Antrim Road all-night garage," he said.
"From what we have been led to believe by him and the police this morning they tripped him up with some sort of walking stick or stick coming out of the garage.
"They trailed him round the side and then proceeded to beat him about the face and head, and then drop some sort of brick or breeze-block on his face."
